Frequently Asked Questions
My groomer always tells me I need to brush my dog more.
Why is it so important?
Regular and thorough brushing is the only way to keep your
dog's coat free of mats. In addition to getting rid of snarls,
brushing also pulls out the dead hair, helping to prevent
mats from forming and stimulating circulation and natural
protective oil production, keeping the coat shiny and
healthy. Less hair on the floor and furniture is an added
bonus!
I brush my dog all the time, but my groomer said she was
matted and needed to be shaved down. What happened?
Most likely you aren't equipped with the right tools for your
dogs coat. Many dogs with a long, thick or curly coat can
be brushed first with a slicker or pin brush, but must be
finished with a good comb out. The comb allows you get all
the way to the skin, which is where most mats form and
hide.
My dog tries to bite the brush, or me, when I try brushing
him at home. How do I get him to let me brush him?
Start with a clean slate, and the right tools. Ask your
groomer what brushes and combs are right for your dog's
coat, and start the day after professional grooming. First
elevate your dog. A sturdy table, or the top of your washer
or dryer offer a solid surface for your pet as well as a
comfortable height for you. Begin with a slicker brush,
followed by a metal comb. You don't need to brush every
inch of his body in one sitting if he is strongly opposed to
grooming at home. Visually break his body into 4 quarters
and start with just one at a time. Brush just his back leg and
tail gently, praise him for cooperating and give him a special
treat if you wish then quit for the day. Do the other side of
the back half the next day and so on. If you make time for
regular grooming every day you will soon have a pet that
looks forward to being brushed, is better behaved at the
grooming salon, and has little to no matting......rewarding
your efforts with a lower grooming bill!
Does my dog need to stay at the salon all day?
Not at all! Most small to medium sized dogs are finished in
about 2 hours. We prefer pets be picked up promptly when
finished, greatly reducing stress to those that aren't
comfortable being crated away from home, as well as
freeing up space for our next customers. If you aren't able
to pick them up within 30 minutes of their estimated finish
time we now offer In-Salon pet sitting for a small fee. See
the Additional Services panel to the left for more
information.

How Often Should My Dog Be Groomed?
A lot depends on how much grooming you are willing
to do at home. The longer the coat, and the less
brushing and combing you do at home, the more often
your dog should be groomed professionally.
